  • Abstract:
Information systems (IS) are widely recognized as being an enabler not only for effective project management, but also for better engineering and construction automation. In addition, dramatic advances in information technology in recent years have motivated the construction industry to look into better methods of utilization of innovative information systems, so as to improve productivity. As a comprehensive concept, in order to maximize the utilization of information technologies, computer integrated construction (CIC) has recently evolved to mean handling separate applications effectively. However, CIC is a very broad and strategic concept. Complicating CIC solutions are the dynamics of technology development and business requirements. It is difficult, therefore, to design systems that are based on the available technology, resources, needs, and benefits. This situation calls for an effective IS planning process for implementing the CIC concept, especially on a company level. Nevertheless, to date, there has been no logical, regimented effort to investigate the methodology for IS assessment in the construction industry. Therefore, the purpose of this research investigation is to propose an IS planning methodology for the construction industry. First, a comprehensive framework is developed so as to identify IS requirements and functions over the project life cycle. Measures and factors influencing information systems are then investigated. Finally, by using the framework, measures, and assessment tools, an IS planning methodology is proposed. The proposed methodology has been applied to a real-world case study. This case study serves as a company-wide validation model for the proposed methodology and reveals problems and valuable lessons for further consideration. Conclusions and recommendations are given.
